So let's say that Steve Jobs called Mark Rein one morning and asked him a simple question: how could the iPhone be changed for the better? Rein wasn't willing to give any specific answer, falling back on a far more general wish-list. So, I think we're well prepared to deal with those things from the engine side.'

'You can build a PC that couldn't run Epic Citadel still-sad but true-but you can also build a PC that can run rings around your 360 or PS3. It's a very, very minor difference between them,' Rein told Ars. iOS is a complete pleasure compared to PCs. 'The experience we have dealing with PCs and their wildly varying configurations. They're also used to working in a much more challenging environment. 'In other words, you have different memory on the different devices, so what can I put on that device? What textures can I use in this device that I can't on that device? Should I, or do I want to, adopt one single format across them and go to the lowest common denominator?' He explains that these are things for the game developers, artists, and designers to work out. 'Most of the challenges on the iOS platform in terms of the slight differences between the devices pose an issue for game developers moreso than the engine side of things,' he said. You have different generations of iPhones with differing levels of power, as well as the iPad with its higher resolution screen, and the iPods. There is enough technology in this device and it has enough functionality and the APIs are solid enough that we can actually deliver a compelling experience.'ДЄpple's gaming ecosystem is also oddly fragmented for a company that's so focused on smaller product lines. 'The big surprise was that it could run the engine. The biggest lesson learned was also the most basic. Working on a mobile phone is a very different thing than what Epic is used to, providing the technology for PC and current-generation consoles. 'When people got it and tried it with their own hands it became very real for them,' Rein said. The tech demo did its job, however, it proved that Unreal Engine 3 was running on the iPhone and iPad with very little compromise what you were seeing onstage at the Apple event wasn't smoke and mirrors. I think people were very shocked by it we saw comments like 'This changes everything,' and 'I can't believe you can do this on a phone.'' He stressed that Epic Citadel was early tech, simply a taste of what is possible down the road. 'It definitely changed people's idea of where we were with the technology in a surprising way. The gaming world took notice, and were treated to a surprise: Epic Citadel was already available on the App Store, allowing anyone with a compatible device to check out the engine running on the hardware themselves. Epic's Mike Capp showed off both Epic Citadel and an early version of Infinity Blade to an impressed crowd.

The engine's grand coming out party happened later, at an Apple event this September. Rein first showed Unreal Engine 3 running on an iPhone at the end of 2009, during a meeting with Anandtech.

The game, developed by Chair, is the first game on iOS devices that uses Epic's Unreal Engine 3. Infinity Blade debuted in the number one slot for highest grossing games in the iTunes App Store, with overwhelmingly positive buzz.
